Travis Knights, Tap Dancer

Originally from Montreal, Travis began exploring the rich tradition of tap dance at the age of 10, studying under Ethel Bruneau, one of the art form’s most influential figures. He launched his professional career in 2000, performing as the lead dancer in “Bojangles”, a film celebrating the life of legendary tap dancer Bill Bojangles Robinson.

As his career evolved, Travis continued to expand his artistic horizons through a variety of exciting collaborations. In 2006, he was the lead dancer for Warner Bros.’ video game adaptation of “Happy Feet”. The following year, he collaborated with Cirque du Soleil, and in 2010, he performed at the opening ceremony of the Vancouver Winter Olympics, a memorable milestone in his career.

That same year, Travis joined Tapestry Dance Company in Austin, Texas, where he performed as a principal dancer until 2013, before returning to freelance work. He then created the “Tap Love Tour”, an independent project that brings together his many talents as a performer, producer, teacher, and interviewer. Taking him from Japan and Singapore to Australia, Germany, Spain, France, and Belgium, the tour has given him the opportunity to share his passion for tap dance with audiences around the world. He also hosts the “Tap Love Tour Podcast”, available on various platforms, where he continues to connect with the wider tap dance community.

Over the years, Travis’s work has earned him recognition for his artistic contributions and achievements. He received the “Austin Critics Table Award” in both 2011 and 2013 for his outstanding work in dance. In 2020, he was honored with the “Jacqueline Lemieux Prize” from the Canada Council for the Arts, followed by a “Dora Award” in 2022 for an outstanding performance. These accolades reflect his ongoing contribution to the art of tap dance and his growing recognition on the international stage.
